SESSION: 226 Extending Learning Through Online Learning
Amy Wilcox, Georgia Connections Academy Virtual Charter School
Australian 3-4 Friday 8:30 - 9:30 AM Capacity: 88
Teachers can use technology to extend student learning by promoting online learning environments. These environments provide "safe zones" in which students can extend classroom practices through high interest such as fan-fiction. Multiple studies confirm that using this type of online social learning extends and promotes academic skills such as sharing ideas, rough draft writing, peer editing, and final drafts. Students are encouraged to build their own personal learning networks as they become part of an online support system. English as a Second Language Learners greatly benefit from practicing their English skills in a written form in a non-threatening forum in which they can access tools such as grammar and spell check. Gifted and Talented students are able to extend their learning beyond the four walls of a classroom as they too are encouraged to find subjects they are passionate about and build networks of other students with similar interests.

The next step will look at how to add dropdown lists to make it easy to grade student work using your new database. This section also includes a look at a at a finished grading database called EZGrader that was developed to score student projects in the instructor’s classes. This EZGrader database can easily be used on an iPad or iPhone to make grading as convenient as a paper form on a clipboard without having to file the paper forms when you are finished Finally we will look at taking this paperless approach to the next level in managing the accountability process. No Child Left Behind has required teachers maintain records of their interventions and support for their students. Using a database allows you to easily keep up with required student modifications, health issues, parent contacts, meetings and classroom observations. Easily store and access student electronic work in this finished solution. Effortlessly catalog your student interventions, and parent contacts using simple forms with dropdown lists, checkboxes and short comment fields in this customized database that the instructor uses to manage his classroom. | SESSION: 278 Teaching a Decision-Making Matrix for Interactive Digital Media |
Laura Beckham, Oconee County Schools
Kenyan 3-4 Friday 11:00AM - 12:00 PM Capacity: 88
Every day teenagers venture into a world with little or no guidance: the world of interactive digital media. This world is constantly growing and changing. In such a world, schools, teachers, and parents need to develop lessons that can be used as a compass--rather than a list of dos and don'ts--to prepare our young people with the decision making skills to navigate in this ever-changing new world. The best protection we can offer our students is to cultivate an “ethic of responsible choice and skills for appropriate behavior” (“Youth, Pornography, and the Internet,” 2002) or as explained by Susan Crawford, Assistant to the President for Science, Technology and Innovation: “The best software is between the ears.” Using informative studies about the way teenagers create and receive digital media, we must educate students around a matrix, teaching these concepts as a decision making guide. If we teach the concepts of the taxonomy as students are encountering them within the four categories of our new digital participatory culture, we will prepare our students to protect themselves in the digital world today and tomorrow.

Swiss 3-4 Friday 11:00AM - 12:00 PM Capacity: 88
We are all aware that students connect with the visual but why depend on outside organizations to make your teaching points exciting? Sure, there are very professional video production programs on the market that can make anyone into a junior Spielberg, but the average classroom teacher does not have the time or money to invest in the overly complicated or expensive. Using simple flip video cameras and an easily accessible video program that comes with most computers, you can combine still images and video clips to make your teaching come alive in the video age.
