SESSION: 2 Virtual Desktop Infrastructure - Real World Implementation
Jay Cawley, Morgan County School System
Australian 1-2 Wednesday 8:30 - 9:30 AM Capacity: 88
This situation is all too familiar at schools across the US: classrooms and labs have aging PCs and/or PCs that simply don’t work because they are old, virus-prone and take too much of precious IT resources to maintain. But, all that is changing as schools are turning to desktop and server virtualization to deliver cost-effective solutions that not only eliminate class time interruptions, but also reduce IT support and management costs. With a looming PC refresh across five campuses, Jay Cawley at Morgan County Schools in Georgia, decided to virtualize the desktop environment and replace 1,300 PCs with zero clients. The ability to streamline PC management while creating a sustainable technology infrastructure for years to come, were two of the deciding factors in the move to desktop virtualization. Morgan County turned to VMware View, Cisco UCS, NetApp and Wyse P20 zero client.

German 3-4 Wednesday 8:30 - 9:30 AM Capacity: 88
An effective teacher has powerful engaging lesson plans. Are your lesson plans still in Word or on paper? By utilizing the power of the SMART Notebook software, teachers have the ability to create interactive lesson plans that engage students with the standards and everyday occurrences of the classroom. Not lessons - lesson plans! Why create lesson plans that are written for the wrong audience. My lesson plans are student focused, interactive, and actually become apart of the everyday routine in the classroom. This helps lower discipline interruptions, increases the student's focus, and allows for every student to be challenged to achieve their greatest potential.

It has been said that we don’t know what we don’t know. The objective of a data dashboard is to show the stakeholder (administrator, teacher, parent, or even the community) key performance indicators related to student achievement in a simple, yet far-reaching, snapshot of data in a hierarchical format. The data dashboard provides the highest level of data aggregation, while allowing the stakeholder to drill down to the lowest level of disaggregation possible.

SESSION: 9 QR Codes in Education: What are they? How do they connect to learning, classrooms, and schools?
Megan Howard, Trinity School
Spanish 3-4 Wednesday 8:30 - 9:30 AM Capacity: 88
What value does a QR (or Quick Response Code) code have for learning? Last year, one student at Trinity School “turned lost into found” with his prototype for re-imagining the School’s Lost and Found system (and then shared his idea at the TEDxKIDS@BC event in British Columbia). This year, four sixth graders at Trinity were tasked to take the prototype (which uses QR codes to identify and notify students of their lost uniform items) one step further. During this elective class, these sixth graders explored whether or not QR codes were a value-add in education...at Trinity and beyond. Their discoveries and observations will interest you! During this session, participants will learn about QR codes, discover how QR codes connect to learning, and hear from students and teachers about their use in classrooms and in schools.

Brent Williams, iTeach Center
Salon 1 Wednesday 8:30 - 9:30 AM Capacity: 260
Educators love to talk about “paradigm shift” – well we really have one now! In the coming age of student driven educational technology, boat-anchor PCs will become a thing of the past and very portable, wireless devices will rule the classroom. It may take a while, but the change is underway. For as long as computer technology has been finding its way to the classroom, the decisions about which technologies to buy and what capabilities to place in the classroom have been driven from the top down. That is, the technology director and various committees pushed technology with little input from students. Now, students are pushing back. The tech-savvy kids of today carry technology better than many classrooms have available. Even 4 year olds are becoming users of the iPad and iTouch. What will they expect when they land in your classrooms? In this session, we'll discuss a Top 10 List of Technologies and Trends that are bringing about this real change - a paradigm shift that will profoundly impact the classroom over the next five years.

Jim Wright, Kennesaw State University
Australian 3-4 Wednesday 1:30 - 2:30 PM Capacity: 88
School districts spend vast sums of money on educational technology; however, for all the promises, technology has not lived up to the potential of transforming student learning (Cuban, 2001). Perhaps a major factor in transforming student achievement is a better understanding of the digital learner (Wright, 2010). This session examines the Millennial/Web 2.0 learner and how educators can better engage the modern student to meet their diverse learning needs. The discussion includes generational learning styles, the Kaiser Family Foundation (2010) study of digital media usage, examination of the technology gap, and specifics about the M2 generation (8- to 18-Year-Olds). Additionally, various software tools will be demonstrated to increase student engagement.

The reality, however, is that as online or blended teachers we have far more opportunities to really get to know our students than we would in a traditional classroom. This is due in large part to the fact that so much of our interaction with students is one on one. Join us to learn about strategies and resources that you can use to take full advantage of this unique opportunity afforded to us as online or blended teachers. During this session we will illustrate various tools and resources that teachers can use to advance beyond just teaching and really connect to students. As schools lead the WLAN industry adage the "all wireless access layer,” both as a primary learning venue, and as an enabler for parent-teacher communication and campus-wide school safety, design and deployment implications must be reconsidered. Whether supporting a 1:1 initiative, a laptop cart rollout, or just faculty access, Wi-Fi solutions for today’s primary and secondary schools must be evaluated based on scalability, performance, security, and ease of use to meet these unique challenges. The distributed, scalable Aerohive architecture is optimized for all these applications. By having the lessons already created in textbook quality, teachers can achieve up to a 30% improvement in efficiency. However, there is a potential downside to this. When lessons are prepared ahead of time, the speed of the lesson is no longer constrained. But how do you maintain the students’ focus? The answer is Reveals. The author will demonstrate the effective use of various types of Reveals in a number of Calculus lessons used in his school. How these devices can be integrated in a teacher’s lessons will also be described, along with easy instructional steps. |

SESSION: 71 Using Collaborative Concept Maps to Increase Content Area Vocabulary
Tom Turner, Polk County School Board, Florida
Kenyan 3-4 Wednesday 3:15 - 4:15 PM Capacity: 88
I began by asking “I wonder what would happen if a 1st grade teacher utilized concept maps in her/his classroom to direct student learning of vocabulary and what effect this would have on reading and fluency?” I hope to demonstrate that concept maps are a way for younger students to learn how to learn effectively and create an avenue for learners to understand content vocabulary. The ability to learn the organizational methods at an early age can be a beneficial skill for younger students to understand the significance of vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency skills. A review of literature suggests that utilizing concept maps with real life experiences creates a potential for meaningful learning to occur. This ARP involved students utilizing concept maps to arrange newfound knowledge through participation in virtual and hands-on lab experiences. Qualitative data collected from two independent cycles of research suggests that the use of concept maps positively influenced student learning of vocabulary. Further research is recommended to ascertain what effects using technology-based concept maps would have on increasing reading comprehension and fluency skills.
