SESSION: W01 Developing Learning Content/Apps for Mobile Devices
Chris Thompson, Georgia Tech
Board 1 Tuesday 9:00 - 12:00PM/1:00 - 4:00PM Capacity: 20
Until recently, development of mobile learning apps has been limited to the technical elite because of the complexity of development and publishing process. Coupled with the recent lifting of restrictions by mobile device manufacturers and the proliferation of user-friendly authoring tools this is no longer the case. Not only is interactive mobile learning app creation now possible by most teachers and students, it is also emerging as a highly engaging classroom learning strategy for anyone seeking to master STEM content. This workshop will offer a hands-on opportunity for teachers with no prior programming experience to learn how to develop a working mobile app for the iPhone/iPod Touch that is suitable for publishing to the iTunes App Store. Participants will also learn about a number of non-programming mobile app authoring tools that can be used in the classroom by students to create their own applications as well. This will be a six hour workshop. For this workshop participants should bring a Mac laptop with the applications Gamesalad and Stencyl installed. Both are available for free. Download Gamesalad at http://gamesalad.com/ and Stencyl at http://www.stencyl.com.

SESSION: W02 Robotics in the classroom - Making Computer Science, Engineering, and Math come Alive!
Christopher Michaud, Paulding County Public Schools
Board 2 Tuesday 9:00 - 12:00PM/1:00 - 4:00PM Capacity: 12
Robotics in the classroom combines the concepts of computer science with the principles of engineering in creating robots to perform simple tasks such as navigating a maze, moving and placing objects, and retrieving objects. Through the designing of mechanical robots, students learn how to apply the concepts of simple machines, sequence, and input/output in a real world situation. During this workshop we will create with the Lego Mindstorms NXT kit and NXT-G language. Participants will work in pairs with the robot as they learn how to program for distance and direction as well as using sensors to navigate. In addition, participants will explore ideas for integrating math and science lessons along with classroom activities. This will be a six hour workshop.

SESSION: W03 Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) to Engage Learners
Tim Clark, Forsyth County Schools
Board 3 Tuesday 9:00 - 12:00PM Capacity: 12
One of the hottest trends in educational technology is Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT)! In schools and classrooms implementing BYOT, students are encouraged to bring their personal technology devices to school to assist in their learning. Likewise, participants are encouraged to bring their own technology devices to this workshop in order to experience the world of BYOT by completing hands-on activities. These activities are designed to demonstrate the potential opportunities of using various student-owned technologies. Some highlights will include collaboration provided by Web 2.0 applications and a focus on creating original projects. Participants will participate in higher level thinking activities involving the use of personal technology devices. They will discover how teaching practices can evolve as they become collaborators in the learning process. They will investigate the possible capabilities of their gadgets; then after they become more literate in their devices and connect them to the Internet via the wireless network, they will explore how they can adapt their technologies to their current classroom practices. Finally, they will transform their learning experiences by communicating, collaborating, and creating with their devices. In this workshop, participants will develop new strategies for researching standards and concepts with BYOT and learn how to facilitate this inquiry-based approach with their students. They will be empowered by using their devices which they own and know so well. This empowerment will give them a firsthand understanding of the learning processes that students undergo in a BYOT environment. With the support of their colleagues, along with the relative anonymity of the web, participants will learn from their mistakes and share their successes. Participants will also use their devices to answer questions and contribute to the body of knowledge that will be developed within this workshop. Furthermore, we will detail all aspects of BYOT initiatives from troubleshooting basic technical issues to classroom management to instructional strategies that work. Participants will develop resources to share and design innovative classroom activities. We will discuss the importance of individual responsibility and safety with personal devices. Furthermore this workshop will explore the uses of social media with BYOT to facilitate engagement, achievement, and communication. So bring your own technology tools to this workshop and be prepared to use them to build something new!

SESSION: W05 CSI GaETC: Digital Forensics and Data Recovery for Educators
Brent Williams, iTeach Center
Board 1 Wednesday 1:00 - 4:00PM Capacity: 20
Are bad things happening on good technology? Digital forensics and data recovery is a fascinating and necessary topic. This session will cover procedures, demonstrate techniques, and show useful tools for investigating Windows computers. You, too, can conduct a computer forensics investigation or recover lost information and files. Here is how to do it! School system administrators and technology specialists must investigate inappropriate use of educational technology in a forensically sound manner. For the protection of all, evidence of improper use must be captured in the correct way and preserved for possible use in administrative or legal action. Most school personnel do not have proper training or expertise in this sensitive area. School systems need to form response teams that know what to do when bad things are suspected. This session addresses the makeup of a response team, appropriate times to bring in legal counsel and/or authorities, proper response levels, evidence gathering techniques, and software used for evidence gathering and building a sound case. New for 2011 - the hot topic of investigating mobile devices (iTouch, iPad, Android, and more) has been added!

SESSION: W11 Lord of the Learning
Tyson Sigette, Hall County Schools
Board 1 Thursday 1:00 - 4:00PM Capacity: 20
The Lord of the Learning workshop introduces teachers to the world of online gaming, a multi-million dollar industry, and shows teachers how to use games designed for entertainment to motivate students. The workshop focus specializes in the use of language arts and math skills, but ideas and discussions about other academic, language, and character development courses rounds out the cross-curricular format. Attendees will leave the session with sample lesson plans and electronic templates to use in their own classrooms. Successful Massively Mulitplayer Online Game(MMO) programs are examined as teachers role play and adopt the position of classroom students using technology. Teachers will also learn how to implement a novel study into a course designed around the world of online gaming. The session is geared toward those who teach middle school and above, but software suggestions and lesson ideas are available to those who teach elementary school as well. Finally, teachers leave the session with an understanding of some of the words and phrases that have entered the language of teens because of online gaming. If you ever wonder why suburban children discuss farming for hours or suddenly begin describing things as ‘epic,’ then this is the workshop for you. Please visit my teacher website (http://teacherpages.hallco.org/webpages/tsigette/lotr.cfm) for more information. Please take some time to download Lord of the Rings Online from www.lotro.com before the session to preview some of what you will be learning. Objectives for the course: • Teachers will use or view blog postings and wikis to experience writing styles enjoyed by students and gamers. • Teachers will understand how MMO games enhance English Language Learning for students whose primary language is not English. • Teachers will be able to create a plot diagram for the introductory quest line of their chosen character. • Teachers will demonstrate an understanding of the Fundamental Counting Principle as it relates to the building of a character’s appearance. • Teachers will acquire and effectively use new vocabulary associated with MMO gaming (MMO jargon). New words include ‘Epic,’ ‘Loot,’ ‘Buff,’ ‘Mob,’ ‘Class,’ ‘Farm,’ and others. • Teachers will contribute ideas on how to teach grammar, technical writing, expository writing, narrative writing, and parts of speech using LotR Online. • Teachers will contribute ideas on how to use LotR Online to supplement mathematics.
